by the time you kill the spirits with EoE they have you dead if they are running it right, have you even fought a good Spirt spam team in ToPK?

"Edge of Extinction"! Throw in "Meteor Shower" or any other high damage AOE and watch the show

Don't be in a Spike team.
It's not like spirits only affect one team, they have to kill you despite the fact that you have the same boosts they do (minus, possibly, the 100 or so HP from Symbyosis). They're killing your team somehow, monk included, despite the spirits. Maybe you should try finding a team build that can outfight them while the spirits are up.
And no, EoE doesn't work, since it's A FRIGGEN SPIRIT. Which means that after 2-3 of their spirits are dead, so is your EoE, and they're spamming.

Look at one of the many whining threads of how spirit spam is cheap, and how its easy to counter.

They're not hard to beat it just takes awhile. Mantra of frost with conflag/winter constantly up reduces damage a lot.
They will have pretty bad offense generally but killing them takes quite awhile. Just gotta target the spirits and keep conflag/winter out of comission.

Cast edge of extinction, then attack the fertile season (or failing that, symbiosis). Drop protective spirit on your edge to keep it alive, then heal it as necessary.
Then watch all their spirits die. And die. And die.

Have you actually tried this against *good* spirit teams? The point is moot when talking about pugs because pug spirit teams can be defeated without EoE. So whether EoE works or not in that case is irrelevant, cuz they lose either way
I've tried EoE repeatedly (my BM is @ 16), and it has never been that effective. Not once (against decent spirit teams).

You can't enchant or hex spirits and their healing is cut down to 10% or so. Try it sometime, preferrably before you suggest it.
A good spirit team will lock down the person casting EoE, so it's not a very good one to rely on.

Diversion spam the rangers, when you catch oath shot, you have ~60 seconds to do as you please, combine that with a good strategy to kill existing spirits (AoE doesn't work, it'll just activate the seed they undoubtedly have on their dias).

If you diversion oath shot and it hits, oath shot is recharge.
Kill the spirits, and use Signet of Humility on the Oath Shotter.

The question is really 'how do you fight Fertile Season?', right? Because every other spirit goes down quickly if you want it to. Fertile Season, for whatever maddening reason, affects itself and as a result isn't nearly as vulnerable to the 'kill the spirits' strategy.
You cannot beat a Fertile Season spam build in a reasonable period of time by killing the spirits. They simply take too long to kill and come back far too quickly. The only halfway decent option is Edge of Extinction, as that'll kill all the spirits at some point and give you a window, but that carries a bunch of problems of its own.
The *only* way to attack a Fertile Season spammer is to shut him down. A high spec Blackout can work, as can a well timed Diversion that catches the Oath Shot. Signet of Humility can work, but you need to plan for complete Oath Shot shutdown if that's your tool - blacking out their elite for 15 of every 21 seconds is not going to accomplish anything.
Of course, the good teams realize this and have *their* shutdown characters locking down your Mesmers, letting their Ranger drop Fertiles to his heart's content.
This is only really a problem in the Hall of Heroes, where the holding team just wants to drag the game out as long as possible to get the victory. In all fairness, you'll probably need a competent 3rd team to dislodge a good spirit team, because one on one they'll be able to hold you off for the ten minutes neccessary.
Peace,
-CxE

This is pretty sad since spirit teams are mainly built for defense to hold the hill and thus accordingly have sub-par offense. If you're actually getting killed by such teams you have more to worry about than spirit spam. At worst it'd be a stalemate without including mission objectives.
But anyway basically what you need is one interrupter staying on the spirit spamming ranger (most probably using spirit + oath shot) while other members toss down EoE and focus down spirits and they'll all drop fast. At 5 second cast time spirits are incredibly easy to interrupt.

Yeah it's a real bitch to go up against one of those spirit spam teams. As people already said, your only hope of killing them within any reasonable amount of time is to kill the ranger that's spamming spirits. And against a well built team, that is gonna be one hell of a difficult task.
I'll tell you right now that with random PuGs, it's gonna be near impossible to counter this thing effectively. You need several key skills in order to do so, and PuGs often don't carry them.

not really. It's not like vs mass fiends. You still have to go through fertile which is still absurdly hard to do.

Anyway if u saw the picture or even encountered it in HoH you will know why edge of extinction isn't the answer to every spirit team.
It only works if you can kill a spirit and we couldn't kill any with focus fire.
